Principle of operation of a heat pump
An air-to-water heat pump takes energy from the air and releases it into the water. Each heat pump is equipped with an exchanger through which a fan pumps outside air. Thanks to the large surface of the exchanger, energy exchange is very effective.
Heat exchange takes place thanks to the refrigerant circulating in a closed circuit. The refrigerant evaporates in the heat exchanger and, due to its state of matter, from liquid to vapor, it is able to absorb energy from the exchanger. As a result, the outside air heats the refrigerant.
The refrigerant in the form of heated vapor is then forced through the heart of the heat pump, i.e. the compressor. The compressor, increasing the pressure of the steam, increasing its temperature.
Steam with a high energy charge is injected into the condenser, i.e. an exchanger, in which the energy is transferred to the water circulating in our building's installation. In the condenser, the refrigerant condenses, changes from hot vapor to liquid and releases heat to the water in the installation.
The condensed coolant is expanded by the expansion valve and returns to the evaporator in a cold liquid state. At this point, the cycle ends and the described process begins again.
The main advantage of a heat pump is the fact that 80% of the energy is taken from the air, and only 20% is consumed by the compressor in the form of electricity. The measure of a heat pump’s efficiency is the ratio of energy extracted from the air to energy extracted in the form of electricity.
